Letten jullie soms op de stofsamenstelling van jullie kleding? Kan je nu zeggen hoeveel procent wol er bijvoorbeeld in je kledingstukken zit? De kans is groot dat er weinig tot geen wol vermeld staat op dat (soms megagroot) wit label binnenin. Daarom vond ik het tijd voor wat research in functie van Wool Week die morgen start in Antwerpen. Wat zijn de voordelen van wol, hoe groot is de kans dat je kledingstuk uit een hoog percentage wol bestaat en zijn die kledingstukken dan wel fashionable?

Do you sometimes pay attention to the fabric mix of your clothes? For example: can you tell me right now how much wool your current clothes contain? There's a chance the (maybe huge) white label in your clothes doesn't mention wool or just a little percentage. That's why I did some research as tomorrow starts Wool Week in Antwerp. What are the advantages of wool, how big is the chance your clothes mention a big percentage of wool and are these clothes even fashionable?

Morgen start Wool Week in Antwerpen. Je kan er onder andere terecht voor een tentoonstelling waar gerenommeerde en startende ontwerpers het belang van wol voor hen exposeren. Het gaat om ontwerpers zoals Christian Wijnants, die vorig jaar nog de Woolmark Prize in de wacht sleepte, Tim van Steenbergen, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter van Beirendonck, ... Maar ook beginnend talent zoals Jo Woojic en Laure Severac, studenten aan de Antwerpse Modeacademie. Curator van dienst is modejournaliste Veerle Windels. Ik mocht vorige week ook een masterclass van haar bijwonen omtrent de trends voor spring-summer 2015. Echt een topdame! Maar dat terzijde ;-) Wool Week is een internationaal initatief van wolorganisaties die de eigenschappen van wol en de verkoop ervan onder de aandacht willen brengen om schapenhouders en de textielindustrie te ondersteunen. Tijd om hier ook eens stil te staan bij wol.

BESTAAN JE KLEDINGSTUKKEN WEL UIT WOL?

Goede vraag! Voor deze post ging ik namelijk op zoek naar een aantal wollen kledingstukken op allerhande sites. Ik botste op heel wat kledingstukken waar letterlijk vermeld stond: "wollen jas" of "wollen trui". Maar dan ging ik ook de stofsamenstelling bekijken en wat bleek? Heel wat van deze kledingstukken bevatten maar 5-20% wol! Wat? Als je de samenstelling dus niet zou bekijken, ga je er dus van uit dat je kledingstuk voornamelijk uit wol bestaat. Hmm, dit bezorgt me wel enkele vraagtekens omtrent de communicatie hiervan... Dus altijd nog even de samenstelling bekijken is de boodschap! Ter info: dit geldt natuurlijk voor eender welke stof.

Good question! For this post I searched for some wool clothes on different fashion websites. I saw a lot of clothes with a description like "wool coat" or "wool sweater". But when I took a look at the fabric composition I had to look twice! A lot of these clothes only contained 5 to 20% wool! Excuse me?! So if you wouldn't check the composition, you would think you just bought a wool piece. I definitely have some questions about this kind of communication... So I advice to check always the composition of your clothes! For any fabric you're searching for by the way.

Wat mij betreft zeker en vast. Kledingstukken uit wol hadden voor mij ook altijd een wollig imago (excuses, die kon ik niet laten liggen ;-) ), maar ik heb mijn mening herzien. Oordeel vooral zelf!

In my opinion? Definitely! Yes, I also thought wool clothes were boring, but I had to change my mind. You can see it yourself:

Tot slot kunnen jullie deze week niet enkel terecht voor de tentoonstelling waar ik het over had, maar ook voor een "Tour de Wool" langs enkele modezaken in Antwerpen die een extra focus leggen op wol, zoals Essentiel, Xandres, Tommy Hilfiger, Veritas, ...

During Wool Week there's also a "Tour de Wool" which passes some fashion stores in Antwerp who put an additional focus on wool, like Essentiel, Xandres, Tommy Hilfiger, Veritas, ...
